There’s a time in her life

I wrote this poem when there was a chance that my daughter would be heading off to live at a private school. It was a great opportunity and based on her scores on the SAT (between the 6th and 7th grade) she competed for a grant to attend the school. It was a tough time for all trying to decide what to do… in the end, she didn’t get the grant and, in the end… I’m happy about!

There’s a time in her life

There’s a time in her life
When your daughter must choose
When the Y in the road
Challenges her and you

When it’s different than you thought
Or sooner than you dreamed
Opportunity presents itself
And inside you scream

You want what is best
But you want her to know
Everything in life
Before she has to go

But the time is now here
And it’s time to let go
And trust what you’ve done
Will last down this road

For life has been calling her
From day one you knew
And some day would be the day
That she’d fly the coup

But that day may be sooner
May be just about here
With good things in store
For this coming year

Support her and love her
And send her on her way
Knowing you’ve given
A light that will stay

And if things should prosper
And success is her end
Then root for and love her
And continue as her friend

And if she finds hard times
Then a shoulder she’ll need
And you’ll be there waiting
With love that she seeks

And whether she stays
Or whether she goes
You’ve come to realize
That you just never know

When one day will come
And your child will move on
But know that you’ll always be
A place she’ll call home
