Donate – Poem – NaPoWriMo Day 4

The sun rises in the morning
You rise too
And there is life
Life all around you

But there is also life in you
Are you aware
Do you know
Can you comprehend

Coursing through your veins
There is life

In your bones
There is life

In your organs,
There is life

Your locks
There is self-esteem

Your voice

Your ears

Some have signed up
To give life in their death
Organs to donate
Body to science

A body would love to roll over
A hand runs slowly over a bald head
A bed used to sit up as the body is unable
Sunken eyes

A different list is added to

Names documented
Too late for this one
Transplant needed for that one
A donor found

Despair and hope commingle

Some cringe
“But there are needles”
And others
“But those are mine”

Have you seen the courage
Of a young one in need
Pushing through
Needles, Chemo and more

It’s a precious thing
Worth sharing
Given in many forms

Bone marrow

Locks of love

Especially to those who
Without it
From you
May have precious little of it left

Many have
Thank you
Many can
Will you

Stephen Kellogg – 2012

I saw an article a few days ago that talked about a recent face transplant. Hard to believe. That sparked an interesting conversation at my house. Then a couple of days ago on a late drive home from work, I heard a radio program (Delilah) and a caller was talking about how she had recently been contacted because she was a match to give someone bone marrow. Someone she didn’t know, but because she had registered to donate, and followed through when there was a match, that boy got an extension on life. All this combined to make me think about donating what you can to those in need. Many times we are down about our situation. We get out of bed in the morning and we’re sore from working in the yard the day before, have an ache or pain from standing too much or maybe just tired from shopping. All of these are things that many people would love to be able to do or to “suffer” through. My heart especially goes out to the young ones, presented so early in life with a huge mountain to climb. They, and their loved ones / care takers, can use what you can give. Please think about what role you can play whether it’s giving blood, signing the “organ donor” part when getting your driver’s license, donating hair to or similar organization. Maybe you have the time to go play your guitar for them or stop by just to say hello, listen, offer a hand or bring a meal.

I’m not sure this poem does it justice, and I may revisit it to see if it needs some cleaning up or rephrasing, but hopefully it encourages you to continue on in doing your part in the areas where your heart leads.
