On another blog, a friend of mine has been doing 30 poetry reading in 30 days during National Poetry Month. He recently read a “parity” of a poem (here) and so I thought I would try my own parity of the same poem. In David’s blog he mentioned that he (like me) grew up listening to Weird Al Yankovic. One of the things that I always appreciated about Weird Al’s parodies is that he was able to get really close to the original sound and rhythm of the original song. “Just beat it” became “Just eat it” or the more recent example “trying to catch me ridin dirty” became “They think I’m white and nerdy.” So I too have attempted to stay as close to the original poem in sound etc.
The original poem is here and my parity is below:
This is just to say
By: William Carlos Williams
I have eaten
The plums
That were in
The icebox
And which
You were probably
Saving
For Breakfast
Forgive me
They were delicious
So sweet
And so cold
My parity:
This is just to Slay (Cat to owner version J )
I have eaten
The Yums
That were in
The unlocked box
As such
You were probably
Feeding
Them breakfast
Forgive me
They were delicious
So sweet
And so bold

In this case “’Yums” for Plums = Yummies to the cat… or birds
hee hee… I giggled out loud. Glad I brought Kenneth Koch to your attention. He seems to have inspired you. Or was it just Al? 😀
Nice work, sir.
David,
It was a mix of all three. The thing about Koch’s version was that it was “a variation” and to me didn’t have the Al “spin” to it. So, I of course took that as a writing challenge. 🙂 I think it turned out pretty well. Thanks for the feedback glad you got a laugh.
Peace,
Stephen
