A mere tear in the ocean – thoughts and poem

It is with a large swing of emotions and tears in my eyes that I sit here and read about another senseless killing spree.  I can’t imagine the horror of hearing about a shooting at your child or loved one’s school and the rollercoaster of emotions that must ensue. For those reunited with their child or loved one the massive sense of relief, for those not, the massive weight of despair. I am only connected to the situation as a fellow human and father of three and yet I’ve stumbled through what must only be a sliver of the emotions those directly involved have experienced… a mere tear in the ocean.

A mere tear in the ocean

Saddened despair
Horror
Anger
Shocked numbness
Tears for the fallen
A rollercoaster of emotions
And yet
A mere tear in the ocean
Compared to emotions of those directly involved
Heartfelt sadness
For those handed a crater of sorrow
They may spend a lifetime trying to fill
May they find some level of comfort and peace
Through the months, years and lifetime that follow
